But Pusignan survived Maumont little more than a fortnight.

At four in the morning of the sixth of May, the garrison made another sally, took several flags, and killed many of the besiegers.

Pusignan, fighting gallantly, was shot through the body.

The wound was one which a skilful surgeon might have cured: but there was no such surgeon in the Irish camp; and the communication with Dublin was slow and irregular.

The poor Frenchman died, complaining bitterly of the barbarous ignorance and negligence which had shortened his days.
