In a few hours every man knew his post, and was ready to repair to it as soon as the beat of the drum was heard.

That machinery, by which Oliver had, in the preceding generation, kept up among his soldiers so stern and so pertinacious an enthusiasm, was again employed with not less complete success.

Preaching and praying occupied a large part of every day.

Eighteen clergymen of the Established Church and seven or eight nonconformist ministers were within the walls.

They all exerted themselves indefatigably to rouse and sustain the spirit of the people.
