The amnesty seemed to be more remote than when, ten months before, he first recommended it from the throne.

The last campaign in Ireland had been disastrous.

It might well be that the next campaign would be more disastrous still.

The malpractices, which had done more than the exhalations of the marshes of Dundalk to destroy the efficiency of the English troops, were likely to be as monstrous as ever.
