Broadsides of prose and verse written in his praise were cried in every street.

The Companies of London feasted him splendidly in their halls.

The common people crowded to gaze on him wherever he moved, and almost stifled him with rough caresses.

Both the Universities offered him the degree of Doctor of Divinity.

Some of his admirers advised him to present himself at the palace in that military garb in which he had repeatedly headed the sallies of his fellow townsmen.
