On the day on which the King left London the Prince of Wales was sent to Portsmouth.

That fortress was strongly garrisoned, and was under the government of Berwick.

The fleet commanded by Dartmouth lay close at hand: and it was supposed that, if things went ill, the royal infant would, without difficulty, be conveyed from Portsmouth to France.

[528] On the nineteenth James reached Salisbury, and took up his quarters in the episcopal palace.
