I didn't want the appearance even to myself of spying upon him.

After three quarters of an hour or so I was suddenly startled alert by hearing the squeak-squeak of a whippletree out on the lawn.

It was the Colonel's buckboard which stood in need of oiling; I recognized the sound.

Curiosity was too much for me this time.

I slipped out of bed and hurried to the window.
