At that time we were about a hundred yards from him and it was necessary to circle off to a point where the rest of his body could be seen.

A little side ravine intervened, and I had to cross it and come directly down through the clump of bushes.

The grass was high, and it was not until I had come within forty yards of the lion that I could get a clear view of him.

He was glaring at me, with tail waving angrily, and his mouth was opened in a savage snarl.

I could see that he didn't like me.
I raised the little .256 Mannlicher, aimed carefully at his open mouth and fired.
