THE FOUR-LEAVED CLOVER As Betty carefully blotted the last page and placed the stopper in the ink-bottle, the clock in the hall began to strike, and she realized that she must have been writing fully an hour.

The whole household was astir now.

She would be late to breakfast unless she hurried with her dressing.
Steps on the gravelled path below the balcony made her peep out between the vines.

Stuart and Doctor Bradford were coming back from an early stroll about the place.

The wistaria clung too closely to the trellis for them to see her, but, as they crossed the grassy court between the two wings, they looked up at Eugenia's balcony opposite.
