Itacism.
[It has been already shewn in the First Volume that the Art of Transcription on vellum did not reach perfection till after the lapse of many centuries in the life of the Church.

Even in the minute elements of writing much uncertainty prevailed during a great number of successive ages.

It by no means followed that, if a scribe possessed a correct auricular knowledge of the Text, he would therefore exhibit it correctly on parchment.

Copies were largely disfigured with misspelt words.
