I had not been able to get into the house, owing to the presence there of a detective named Tarling, but I had had a very good look round and I knew the way in, without coming through the front door, where a porter was always on duty.
"I had no difficulty either in getting into the building or into the flat.

I thought it best to go in early because the girl might be out at the theatre and I should have a chance of concealing myself before her return.

When I got into the flat I found it was in darkness.

This suited my purpose very well.

I went from one room to another.
