Put in a bottle, and put the bottle in a hot water bath until all solids are dissolved.
Strain and add 1/4 gill clear poppy oil.

Shake well and apply with cotton cloth.
A soft, dull, glossy finish may be obtained by applying two coats of a mixture of one part each of white shellac and banana oil (amyl acetate).

When dry, sandpaper lightly and wax.
_French polishing._ The finest of shellac finishes is French polish.
It is a thin, clear, permanent finish, but the process takes time and patience.

It is not much used in practical work, because of the time expense, but is often employed in school shops, because only a few materials are necessary, it dries quickly, and gives a beautiful finish.
