Scindia fulfilled the other part of his promise, and insisted upon the Peishwa's receiving Nana as his minister.

A few days later he had Ghatgay arrested, by the sons of two of his European officers.
Scindia was, indeed, most anxious to be off.

He did not know that the Nizam had refused Bajee Rao's offer.

He had received news of widespread disaffection among his troops at home, and felt that he could not rely upon those with him.

As soon, therefore, as he received the money from Nana, he partially paid the arrears due to the soldiers.
