Besides every stage of water makes a change in the nature of the river at every point.

In addition to this outlook, the Major kept an eye on the geology, as he was chief geologist; and Steward, being assistant geologist did the same.

Richardson was assistant to Steward.
Jack was general assistant and afterwards photographer.

I was artist, and later, assistant topographer also.

It was my duty to make any sketch that the geologists might want, and of course, as in the case of everybody, to help in the navigation or anything else that came along.
Each man had a rifle and some had also revolvers.
