The column had hardly started when they were attacked.

The enemy held a strong series of fortified positions; but these were captured, one after another.
A couple of miles farther, they again met with opposition.

The enemy, this time, occupied the bank of a stream.

The Maxims at once opened fire on them, and did such great execution that the Ashantis rapidly became demoralized, and fled.

Close to the rear of this spot was found a newly-constructed stockade, some three hundred yards in length; but the fugitives continued their flight without stopping to man it.
When they advanced a little farther, the force was severely attacked on all sides.
