When she reached their accustomed table, it was empty, and only their two places were laid.

She looked at him in surprise.
"But I thought you said that Linda would be so disappointed!" she reminded him.
He shook his head.
"I do not think that I mentioned Linda's name," he protested.

"She went to bed soon after tea in an absolutely hopeless state.

I am afraid that to-night I was selfish.

I was thinking of myself.
