The Tribes and Castes of the Central Provinces of India--Volume I (of IV)

PART I
400/849

Sacrifices of the _gens_ and phratry.
Both in Athens and Rome there was a division known as phratry or _curia_.

This apparently consisted of a collection of _gentes_, g'enh, or clans, and would correspond roughly to a Hindu subcaste.

The evidence does not show, however, that it was endogamous.

The bond which united the phratry or _curia_ was precisely the same as that of the _gens_ or clan and the city.

It consisted also in a common meal, which was prepared on the altar, and was eaten with the recitation of prayers, a part being offered to the god, who was held to be present.
