A modern poet, in a moment of impulsive orthodoxy, praises Christianity because it "taught original sin, The corruption of man's heart ..." This definition is sufficiently accurate.

"Original sin," says the Ninth Article of the Anglican Church, "...

is the fault and corruption of the Nature of every man ...

whereby man is of his own nature inclined to evil ...

and therefore, in every person born into the world, it deserveth God's wrath and damnation." How far the popular interpretation of the doctrine of original sin coincides with the latest theological refinement of the doctrine, I cannot pretend to say.
