He had not spoken during the time the police were in the room, but had sat quietly on his chair, with bent head and clasped hands, looking very old and frail.

"It will be as well for him to see Phil before going upstairs," she added.
Sir Philip looked up at the mention of his son's name.

"Poor Phil," he muttered dully.
"I think the doctor should examine Phil the moment he comes," continued Miss Heredith, aside, to Musard.

"His look alarms me.

I fear the shock has affected his brain.
