On the left-hand side of the passage, going from the head of the stairs to the back of the house, were four rooms.

The first was a small, comfortably furnished sitting room, where Mr.Glenthorpe and his guest had dined the previous night.

The bed chamber of the murdered man adjoined this room.

Next came the room in which Ronald had slept, and then an empty lumber room.

There were four bedrooms on the other side, all unfurnished, except one at the far end of the passage, the lumber-room.
