He was brought down to us in the counsel-room, looking like a scared and sickly ghost.

What little spirit he had before had already vanished.

I have never seen a more wretched human creature.

His one dread was of going to prison; and together we hastened to convince him that his only avenue of escape lay through us.

We pointed out to him that so long as he stuck to the story we should prepare for him he had nothing to fear; and, as evidence of our power to protect him, we instanced the fact that we had already secured fifty thousand dollars' cash bail for him.
