A short council of war was held.

It was arranged that Monsieur de la Verrie with his hundred musketeers, and Foret with as many more, should advance against the dragoons; while Cathelineau and Stofflet, with a hundred musketeers and the main body of peasants with their pitchforks, should attack the National Guards.

As soon as they were within easy range, the peasants opened fire.

Reloading, the peasants advanced at a run, poured in a volley at close quarters; and then, with loud cheers, charged the dragoons.
These, being but newly raised troops, were seized with a panic, turned, and galloped off at full speed.
