The preparations were all finished, when firing broke out.

Jean kissed his wife.
"May God's blessing keep you," he said.

"I trust that we shall meet again, when the fighting is over." Then he kissed his child, wrung Leigh by the hand, and rode off to join the general.

The women, children, and the men who had thrown away their arms, the sick and wounded, were already leaving the town.
"Marthe, you must go now," Patsey said to the faithful nurse.
They had bought a horse for her from a peasant who had captured it, a riderless animal that belonged to one of Westermann troopers.
"Here are fifty louis in assignats.

I wish that you could have gone with us, but that is not possible.
