The motion was still tremendous, but he could feel a sensible change from what it was before.

The motion of the ship was less sudden and violent and, although she rolled tremendously, she rose each time with an easier motion.
An hour later the watch turned out, and the others took their place.

The wind was blowing as heavily as when the hurricane began, but the aspect of the sea had changed.

It was no longer a mass of leaping, tumbling water; but was running in long waves, following each other, rising high above the vessel's stern as they overtook her.

Having lashed himself to the side, he remained for an hour watching the sea.
