All I have got to do is to arrest you." So saying, and before Reuben knew what he was about, he slipped a pair of handcuffs over his wrists.

Reuben flushed up.

Hitherto he had scarcely taken the matter seriously, but to be marched handcuffed through the streets of Lewes was an indignity which enraged him.
"Take these off," he said angrily.

"I will go quietly with you." "You may or you may not," the man said doggedly.
