The chief rabbi interposed.

The eldest boy in the school manifested an inclination to embrace the Christian religion, and was beaten, dragged to the synagogue, and compelled to go through the form of worship.

He was then put in irons procured from the mad-house.

He afterwards fled to Constantinople, where he was baptized by one of the Scotch missionaries.

The teacher was also thrown into prison, on a false accusation.
