FOILING THE PLOTTERS.
Merriwell and Clancy had to diminish their speed in order to let the cowboys keep them in sight.

This was annoying, and Merry formed another plan and slowed to a halt in order to broach it to Blunt.
"Clancy and I," said he, as Blunt and his friends galloped up, "can cover the ground between here and McGurvin's four times as quick as you fellows.

I think we had better push on." "What's the use ?" Blunt demanded.

"We'll all get there before afternoon." "Suppose the man with the flashy clothes and the red mustache should take it into his head to come to McGurvin's before afternoon ?" "Then maybe it's too late.

Possibly he's there now." "We'll go on and see," said Merry.
