The splendid battalion marched up through the streets towards St.Jean.The men wore their overcoats and full kits.

I passed up and down the battalion talking to officers and men.

As I was marching beside them, a sergeant called out to me, "Where are we going, Sir ?" "That depends upon the lives you have led." A roar of laughter went up from the men.

If I had known how near the truth my words were, I probably would not have said them.
