I went by the house where the C.O.of the 16th Battalion had had his headquarters as I passed that afternoon.

It was now quite deserted and the windows in it and in the houses round the square were all shattered.

Not a living thing could I see.

I walked across to my billet and found the shutters of the house closed.

On the table where my letters were, a smoky oil lamp was burning.
