"The Germans are on our heels." "Where are the infantry ?" I called out.

"They have all gone." That was one of the most awful moments in my life.

I said to myself, "Has old England lost the War after all ?" My mouth became suddenly dry as though filled with ashes.

A young fellow on horseback stopped and, dismounting, very gallantly said, "Here, Sir, take my horse." "No thank you," I said, but I was grateful to him all the same for his self-sacrifice.

I returned to the guardroom and told the sentries what had happened.
