Fergus had already adopted the all but universal custom, in the German army, of smoking. "Now," the count said, when the cigars were lighted, "tell me all about this affair at Dresden." Fergus related the facts, as modestly as he could. "No wonder Eulenfurst speaks of you in the highest terms," said the count.
