He edited the Boston _Courier_ with great ability.

He was a member of both Houses of the Massachusetts Legislature.

He was a member of the State Senate in 1850 and 1851.

He left the _Courier_ in June, 1848, about the time the Free Soil movement begun, and was not active in politics afterward.
I had no personal acquaintance with Charles Francis Adams.
I have known his son, Charles Francis Adams, President of the Massachusetts Historical Society, pretty well.

He inherits a great deal of the ability and independence which belongs to his race.
