But he had already gained a competent fortune by his business sagacity.

He brought to the cause his sound judgment, his warm and affectionate heart, and his liberal hand.

He was then, as he has ever since been, identified with every good and generous cause.

His stanch friendship was then, as it has been ever since, the delight and comfort of the champions of freedom in strife and obloquy.
