"Ah! yes; that is so pleasant.

I have reason to know that Mr Palliser is very much gratified that you should be so much with her." This was unbearable.

Alice could not quite assume sufficient courage to get up from her chair and walk away from him, and yet she felt that she must escape further conversation.

"I don't know that I am very much with her, and if I were I can't think it would make any difference to Mr Palliser." But Mr Bott was not a man to be put down when he had a purpose in hand.
