POLICE WORK Having to dress for dinner on a certain evening, I took off my money-belt, and quite forgot to put it on again.

It happened to contain twelve English pounds.

I left it lying on the table in the hotel bedroom.

When I came back in the small hours of the morning it was gone.

Rashid--who slept out at a khan in charge of our two horses--came in at eight o'clock to rouse me.
