The venerable president received him with open arms.

He put Paul's picture in his gallery of the boys who were a credit to the institution, and both talked over old times and life's many changes with emotion, and laughed heartily over certain well remembered experiences.

Paul felt a deep pang of remorse at the praise and the welcome, for his memory bore another record.
During Paul's sojourn at college, his family had moved from Alleghany to New York.

His father was an importer of sea-shells, corals, marine curiosities anal oriental goods, of which he made annual sales in the chief cities of the country.

He took Paul with him and gave him the first lesson in business.
