CHAPTER XI
42/107

The principals met by appointment in Hyde Park, attended by Macartney and colonel Hamilton.

They fought with such fury, that Mohun was killed upon the spot, and the duke expired before he could be conveyed to his own house.

Macartney disappeared, and escaped in disguise to the continent.

Colonel Hamilton declared upon oath before the privy-council, that when the principals engaged, he and Macartney followed their example; that Macartney was immediately disarmed; but the colonel seeing the duke fall upon his antagonist, threw away the swords, and ran to lift him up; that while he was employed in raising the duke, Macartney, having taken up one of the swords, stabbed his grace over Hamilton's shoulder and retired immediately.

A proclamation was issued, promising a reward of five hundred pounds to those who should apprehend or discover Macartney, and the duchess of Hamilton offered three hundred pounds for the same purpose.
