"Said a relative had left him a fortune and he was going on a long trip for his health." Britz proceeded to enlighten the district attorney as to the real reason for the deputy's departure.

He related all the circumstances that led up to the substitution of prisoners, Wells listening with growing amazement.

When Britz finished, the district attorney regarded him an instant, incredulity engraved on his face.
"I can't believe it," he said.

"And yet, lieutenant, I don't doubt your word an instant." "You'll be able to ascertain the facts for yourself," pursued Britz.
"What I am here for is to ask your help in solving the Whitmore case.

Of course, you'll prosecute the deputy if you ever find him.
