Her thick hair was grey.

She looked as if she had borne for many years the brunt of continued ill health, or the ill health of others, as if she had been obliged to lift heavy weights too young.

Perhaps she had.

Everything about her personality seemed fragile except her peace of mind.

You could not look at Magdalen without seeing that she was a happy creature.
But very few did look at her when Fay was beside her.
