Here stood a stone chair, on which the Rajah sat when he adjudicated upon disputes among his people, heard petitions, and gave audiences; while a massive door on the left-hand side gave entrance to the private apartments.

These were all small, in comparison with the entrance hall.

The walls were lined with marble slabs, richly carved, and were dimly lighted by windows, generally high up in the walls, which were of great thickness.

The marble floors were covered with thick rugs, and each room had its divan, with soft cushions and rich shawls and covers.
The room in which they had supped the night before was the only exception.

This had been specially furnished and decorated, in English fashion.
