The Sonnets, Triumphs, and Other Poems of Petrarch

PREFACE
136/421

The night was dreadful; it was impossible to get to the castle, and I was obliged to put up at a little village, where my bed and supper appeared tolerable from extreme weariness.

I determined to proceed by land; the perils of the road appeared less dreadful to me than those by sea.

I left my servants and baggage in the ship, which set sail, and I remained with only one domestic on shore.

By accident, upon the coast of Genoa, I found some German horses which were for sale; they were strong and serviceable.

I bought them; but I was soon afterwards obliged to take ship again; for war was renewed between the Pisans and the Milanese.
Nature has placed limits to these States, the Po on one side, and the Apennines on the other.
