Many came out and in, sailors from the quay or the ships lying there; but in none of their movements was anything suspicious found.
At five in the afternoon a boy of twelve years old, a son of the landlord, came out.

He looked suspiciously round, and then walked along the quay.

As he passed a house of considerable size, he again looked round, pulled the bell twice, hastily, and then walked on.
He made a long detour, and returned to the tavern.
Not a moment was lost in following up the clue.

The house in question had been unoccupied for some time.

The owner was, however, known to Van Duyk, who at once called upon him.
