It discharged the first of these offices by condemning Hus and Jerome of Prague to the stake.

It left the second practically untouched.

Yet the question of reform had been gravely raised, largely discussed, and fundamentally examined.

Two methods were posed at Constance for the future consideration of earnest thinkers throughout Europe.

One was the way suggested by John Hus; that the Church should be reconstituted, after a searching analysis of the real bases of Christian conduct, an appeal to Scripture as the final authority, and a loyal endeavor to satisfy the spiritual requirements of individual souls and consciences.
