PREFACE
60/118

In effect, the Republic agreed to relinquish Cervia and Ravenna to the Pope, and their Apulian ports to Charles, engaging at the same time to pay a sum of 300,000 ducats and stipulating for an amnesty to all their agents and dependents.

It is not so clear why Clement warmly espoused the cause of Sforza.

That he did so is certain.

He obtained a safe-conduct for the duke, and made it a point of personal favor that he should be received into the Emperor's grace.

This stipulation appears to have been taken into account when the affairs of Ferrara were decided at a later date against the Papal interests.
Francesco Maria Sforza appeared in Bologna on the 22nd.
