Every branch of mathematics and natural science had been explored by him with the enthusiasm of a pioneer.

He made experiments in chemistry, mechanics, mineralogy, metallurgy, vegetable and animal physiology.

His practical studies in anatomy were carried on by the aid of vivisection.
