Now, it was a wilderness of weeds.

The glass in the windows was broken--the roof unthatched--the walls dilapidated.

Jack turned away with an aching heart.

It seemed an emblem of the ruin he had caused.
As he proceeded, other painful reminiscences were aroused.

At every step he seemed to be haunted by the ghost of the past.
