We had letters to the priest, but he was not in town.

The schoolhouse was placed at our disposal, and we moved two long benches close to each other, side by side; rush mats were brought, and these we laid upon the benches, and upon the teacher's table, for beds.

Mr.Lang and Don Anselmo took the table, Manuel and I the benches, and Mariano had the floor.

The cold was so intense that none of us slept much.

We were astonished, in the middle of the night, and at intervals in the early morning, say at two or four o'clock, to hear snatches of songs.
