Of the sixty-six that had been elected as Republicans, two,--Messrs.

Armstead and Streeter,--had been elected from Carroll County on an independent ticket.

They classed themselves politically as Independent or Alcorn Republicans.

Carroll was the only doubtful county in the State that the Democrats failed to carry.

The Independent ticket in that county, which was supported by an influential faction of Democrats, was brought out with the understanding and agreement that it would receive the support of the Republican organization.
