I heard her mutter, 'They find plenty of fault with her about that,' but I took no notice.
I had satisfied my curiosity, and I knew now why Max fancied an Indian letter would raise Gladys's spirits; but all the same he might have spoken out.

Max had no business to be so mysterious with me.
I heard Captain Hamilton's name again shortly afterwards.

I was calling at Gladwyn one afternoon.

I was loath to do so in Gladys's absence, but I dared not discontinue my visits entirely, for fear of Miss Darrell's remarks.

To my surprise, I found her _tete-a-tete_ with Uncle Max.
