[French and English by Evelyn Everett-Green]@TWC D-Link bookFrench and English BOOK 3: Disaster 12/30
Fritz almost lived upon the lake in his boat, watching for the first signs of the enemy's approach.
That a great part of it would come by water he did not doubt.
And sometimes he would leave his boat in a creek, and climb some adjacent height, from whence he could scan the surface of the lake, and see what was stirring there. Roche was his companion on those excursions; and the two had climbed together to a commanding height, when upon the dawn of a glorious midsummer morning they saw the long-expected flotilla covering the lake and making headway up it. What a sight it was! The hearts of the onlookers seemed to stand still within them as they looked.
And yet it was a magnificent spectacle.
Myriads and myriads of Indian canoes like flocks of waterfowl seemed swarming everywhere, whilst from two to three hundred bateaux conveyed the French and Canadian soldiers.
