The two recognized each other instantly.

The Mexican had the advantage.
He was on horseback and the smoke was in Ned's eyes, not his own.

With a shout of triumph, he rode straight at the boy and made a fierce sweep with his cavalry saber.

It was fortunate for Ned that he was agile of both body and mind.

He ducked and leaped to one side.
